I'm sure you will enjoy the posts I have planned about my new book, House Down Dirt Lane. Here are a few that I will do but more to come:
Many of the chapters in the book are based on actual events. I'll tell you which ones are true, what exactly stayed the same in those chapters, and what I changed to make the story more interesting. For example, the Peeping Tom chapter is pretty accurate, with events that happened as I wrote in the book. The chapter about the Arrival is primarily true, but instead of the prank we pulled on Samantha involving a CIA agent, it was a man who turned out to be an FBI agent.
To give you a better idea of where all this happened, I'll include a map of Brigham City during the 1960s. This map will show you the exact location of the haunted house I wrote about, which is central to the book. Keep in mind, though, that Brigham City has undergone many changes, and the places where most of these things occurred have become housing developments. But back in the 1960s, the area was mostly marshlands.
I'll share some of the research I did to write my book, especially the research on the Nevada Test Site and the atomic bomb testing that happened. To give you an idea, I had close to 100 pages of research but only used about 2% of that in my book. It is fascinating stuff. I'll include the 1997 congressional hearing that I mentioned in the preface.
I'll try and find photos of me and my friends. I'll include places like Peach City, Idle Isle, and Maddox. I'd love to find a photo of the junkyard and the car the junkyard man lived in. I'll take a photo of the house I grew up in, which is still pretty much the same. I hope to find photos of the chicken coop and swamp lands. Time to go visit the Brigham City archives.
I'll take you through my writing process. My book took me over 7 years to write, but most of that time was doing research and learning about the process of writing. I took a master class from the following authors: Dan Brown, David Baldacci, Judy Blume, Margaret Atwood, RL Stine, James Patterson, Malcom Gladwell, to name of few. I'll give you some of the pointers I learned from these successful and famous authors.
